SENATE: Passes 60-39 Health Reform Bill
The Senate voted 60-39 just after 7 a.m. on Thursday morning to pass the chamber’s $871 billion health care reform bill (HR 3590), right in time for the Christmas holiday. The fourth and final vote came after Democrats proved in three procedural votes that they had the support to overcome any filibuster attempts, thus prompting Senate Republicans to make a deal Tuesday afternoon to end their entitled 30-hour post-cloture debate time early in order to allow senators and their staffs some travel time for the holiday. The Senate will now adjourn for a three-week break after which they will return to Washington to reconcile their legislation with the more liberal House reform bill (HR 3962).
